A new threat – the Caliphate – has arisen in the Middle East, and the Pentagon is stymied – how to thwart these fanatics without sending American troops into yet another costly, unpopular war?
One high-level official thinks he has found the ultimate counter-weapon demons. Ted Burnett, head of the CIA’s most secret division, has put in motion a plan to summon the denizens of Hell into our world, control them, and send them against America’s enemies.
The plan is insane. Ted Burnett is insane. But no one with the power to stop him is even aware that the plot exists – except for occult investigator Quincey Morris and his partner, white witch Libby Chastain.
No humans can hope to control an army of demons – for long. If Burnett summons the Damned into this world, they will not depart until all of humanity has been laid waste. He has to be stopped. But with CIA-trained killers at his disposal, Ted Burnett is prepared to eliminate anyone who would interfere with his plan. It will take all the resourcefulness and power Morris and Chastain and their friends can muster to stop him...
“Justin is a first class writer; he's smart and he's fun, he moves quickly and he takes corners at speed. Every time you think you know where he's going, he makes a point of going somewhere else. His characters are sharp and vivid, his dialogue crackles with wit and tension, and when it comes to the scarier corners of the magical underworld, he knows his stuff.”
– Simon R. Green, author of the “Nightside” series
"Justin Gustainis is a master of his craft."
– Eileen Wilks, author of Mortal Danger and Night Season
“Keep an eye on Justin Gustainis. You’ll be seeing more of him soon.”
– Jim Butcher, author of the “Dresden Files” series
“Gustainis’ prose is sharp, fast paced, and highly entertaining.”
– Dark Worlds Magazine
Strange Magic A Morris and Chastain Investigation Book 5 eBook Justin Gustainis
This series is different…off the beaten path, and I like that. I may have to invoke the spoiler alert because it is hard to describe characters that are so marvelously diverse and the relationships between them without depriving readers the enjoyment of discovery. I admit to geek proclivities. Every time Senator Howard Stark was mentioned, the Avengers came to mind. I loved that this series mentioned other chars from my fav fantasy books. Peters, the assassin reborn, so to speak, was ever steady. Very composed and able to handle anything thrown at him. Ashur Badaktu…she isn’t my fav char, but close. I love the way she…counsels. I think Libby Chastain is my favorite. She resonates with me…her doubts and her strengths. Sounds like polar opposites, but I think it sums her up. I find myself amazed that there isn’t more reviews full stop. I love this series and this book in particular. This author is gifted and compelling. In some ways....this reminds me of a Canadian television series which has characters of varying sexual orientations. Positive comparison.Product details

Strange Magic A Morris and Chastain Investigation Book 5 eBook Justin Gustainis Reviews
The book is really exciting. Keeps you intrigued in reading until the end. Couldn't put the down.
The author has designed an interesting world with problems mirrored in today's headlines.
Fabulous as always, great writer
An okay read. Was hoping the author would improve from his previous novels but it appears not. The characters are stuck in a rut. No wonder it's only available in ebook form.
I absolutely love these stories by Gustainis. He has such a great imagination - has demons, witches, ghosts, you name it and such a great plot. I like the way the heroes persevere and how they win in the end. There is a touch of sex mentioned with the demon and one heroine but otherwise just a really, really great story. Anyone who likes paranormal mysteries should enjoy this I would think.
I've enjoyed a lot of Mr. Gustainis's work, including earlier entries in this series. However, it really felt like this book was being phoned-in. Parts of it just never really got tied in - interesting vignettes like being hired by a vampire lord and rescuing a damsel from a sacrifice driven daemon summoning never really fit into the story. A lot of repeated ideas from prior work and a lot of references to prior stories. Maybe the "history" of the series has just gotten too complicated?
This is the latest investigation for Quincy Morris and Libby Chastain. It says that this is book 7, but if someone can show me book 6, I would be grateful.
Anyway, the book begins with our heroes seperated as they accomplish their own individual jobs. Quincy must stop a nest of ghouls in the desert while Libby tries to track down a missing college student. These two randomly seeming jobs crossover into a conspiracy that reaches the highest levels of government when they discover that someone is trying to weaponize demons to use against our enemies.
Fun stuff and I wish there was more, but it was a short read that I got through in a few hours. It touches on some of the author's older works which gives a nice sense of continuity to the world. Our FBI agents and citizens of Hell return as all six heroes from the past books reunite to take out the plans to use demons as WMDs.
As always, there is enough sex appeal in the books to catch your interest while keeping violence in line as well. I hope that we get to finish some of the story lines that have been going on for a few books now, but for now, we must wait for the next adventure to come.
